Common Questions About Our Service

JULY 2010 NOTICE: We are now scheduling alterations and repairs into MARCH 2011. This said, we welcome your sweaters and other knit items if you can afford such a wait.

Do you repair cashmere sweaters? Yes we do! In most cases, holes in sweaters are repaired by reknitting with yarn from the garment which produces excellent results. Holes and stains can be reknit in fine and bulky knit cashmere sweaters. We have worked on most of the major brand names of quality cashmeres. Our customers are quite delighted with the results. For more information, including costs you might find our Sweater Repair and Moth Holes page helpful.

Can you shorten the sleeves of my sweater? YES! We are able to shorten the sleeves of most knits. Simply indicate the desired length. We understand that you want the original 'finish'. The sleeves will be tapered if necessary to accomodate the new length. After the process is done, the sleeves look the same as originally, they are just the right length! Of course if you want something about the original finish changed, that can be done too.

Yes, this includes sleeves with button openings (or mock button openings) like you find on St. John Knits! For more information about knit alterations, you might find our Knit Alterations page helpful.

Where do you get the yarn from? In most cases the yarn is taken from the garment. This is the only way to insure an exact match in color, weight and fiber. Retrieving the yarn is one of the skills required to do 'reknitting'. The source varies with each knit item.
The main thing to know, is that you will not see where the yarn is taken from. And, that it is the using of yarn from the garment itself that gives the best results in doing the repairs. Even after a garment is repaired our customers often ask, "Where did you get the yarn from?"

Can you alter my St. John Knit? Yes! We can shorten, take-in and do all types of alterations of St. John Knits and many other brand named knits as well. Simply have the item pinned for the alterations you need and send to us. We have provided knit alterations to better clothing stores for many, many years! For more information about knit alterations, you might find our Knit Alterations page helpful.

How long does it take? Our busiest time of year starts with the release of each new fall season, around the end of August and runs through March. During this time, there can be as much as a 3-4 month wait for alterations and those items that are badly damaged. We do try to fit items with minor damage in sooner as possible. At the time we contact you with the cost, you are given the week when your items are scheduled to be completed.
UPDATE: Due to some very nice but unexpected reviews online and in the press, we have been receiving many more items than usual and are now requiring a 5-6 month lead time.

How do I get my sweater to you? Use our handy form and mailing label page. Just print it out and fill in the info. Then include it with the items that you are sending. It's that easy!

If you send items via Priority mail we will have your package in 2-3 days. We return items via Prioity Mail, unless otherwise requested.

How do I pay? After we receive your items, you are contacted by email or phone with the exact cost. You may either send a check or pay by credit card. We provide PayPal for online credit card processing or you may include your credit card information on the Handy Form and Mailing Label to be sent with your items. We will okay the cost with you before making any charges.

Do you do reweaving of woven fabric or work on other type of needlework? Sorry we do not do reweaving of woven fabric. We work almost exclusively on knits. Occasionally minor repairs of lace or crochet items can be done. In those cases, we do need to see the item to determine if the repairs can be done.
